Can anyone tell me the diff. between a veil and a normal angel fish fin? I've tried google and am not finding anything, and I'm trying to order some angels but want to make sure i get the fins i want. pictures with the diff as well as descriptions would be helpful thanks

veil= long fins
Either way, they're just one species, Pterophyllum scalare. Two other species exist but are rarer than the scalares, Pterophyllum altum and P. leopoldi.

The one pictured in your avatar is a veil, to many it would qualify as a "super veil". Basically veils have longer fins than standars angels. Knowing that your fish pictured is a veil all you need do is search the forum for a picture of one with shorter fins that is not stunted or deformed.

Keep in mind the Veil and super Veil, will need more room.

How much room would you suggest for each variety?
I have six super veils and two ABN in my 46G and may have to remove a couple when they grow some.

It looks like when they mature you would only be able to keep 2 in the 46Gl, they will get aggressive.

There's also a fourth one. Some consider it a variant of the super veil. A superveil flairs out while this type does not, making it look like a ribbon. It's sometimes referred to as a ribbontail. It's rare but considered by some breeders as ugly.
It was in the front cover of the Aquarium Fish International mag, a few years ago.

Here's a scan of the front cover....
I've raised a gold fry rescued from one of the local chain LFS to look like this and paired it with one of my standard veil gold angels.
This cover spurred a discussion of how ugly this fish was on one of the other Angelfish boards at the time. Some of the experts considered it ugly and the product of poor water conditions and the magazine showed poor judgment in having it on the cover.
My breeding pair indicates that the trait is more genetic than environmentally influenced. They produced fish that were another variant of the veil tail angels. I've grown gold angels with combtails from their fries which later on produced ribbontails as well. I don't have the numbers to prove that it is genetic conclusively, however.
