Angelfish have a pretty wide range and are distributed throughout the amazon. In their natural habitat, do they favor clear water (typical of most aquariums) or do they favor blackwater like discus? Blackwater being the tea-colored water after filtering with peat or something similar. I have read information that suggests both although most seem to indicate that angelfish are primarily a clearwater fish. Which is it?

I would think they like black water better, but there's not much you can do bout that. ;) Clear water is fine for em. :)

The answer is yes.

The various Pterophyllum species cover a huge area in the Amazon-Orinoco. Sven Kullander and the Swedish National Museum of Natural History keep a website you should bookmark: http://www.nrm.se/ve/pisces/acara/pterophy.shtml

Clarwater and blackwater slow-flowing ("lentic") situations are mentioned there. --This site is the best for South American cichlids!
