I've heard that turface MVP is a good cheap substrate for planted tank aquariums and I think I found a branch of John Deere that carries it close by. However, when I called them, the person on the line was not very clear about what they offered. I think he said that they have turface ALL-SPORT MVP which they're selling in 50 lb bags for $20. Is this the same stuff? If I drive over there, what are some easy ways I can tell just by looking at the bag? If it is the right product, what are the different colors it could other than grey?

I think all sport is the right version of turface to buy, and it's usually a golden yellow/light brown color. They may have samples of turface in little containers to show you, and whichever one is the color mentioned above, that's the one I'd go with. It's considered a decent substrate b/c it's able to hold on to substances found in ferts that are placed in the aquarium better than just plain gravel. I might be wrong about that, but someone else will surely respond here shortly.

I don't know what the "all-sport" signifies, I can't find anything about that on their website. Turface MVP is one option that comes in a small grained, buff color. The other is Turface Pro-League, which is a little larger grain size and comes in a few different colors.
