Ammonia started to go to zero, but we had nitrites but no nitrates. Now two days ago the nitrites went to zero, and nitrates are going off the chart.

At the same time, I had some kind of bad algae outbreak and the water in my tank is a really yucky yellow.

I'm afraid to use something for the algae for fear of killing my cycle. I removed all of it by hand and took out the wood and scrubbed it.

Why is my water yellow?

Should I do a water change and test again tomorrow and if all is good add fish?

Should I dose with amonia after the water change?

Thank you!!

It's been a long wait but we are almost there!

if your ammonia and nitrites are zero i would do a large WC, around 80%, and then dose with a small amount of ammonia before going to bed. if in the morning ammonia and nitrites are clear and nitrates are low, 20ppm or less, then get some fish.

The water is probably yellow from tannins leeching from teh driftwood. They are harmless and some of us find them desirable. They can be removed through regular water changes or from the use of carbon. I would do a water change to get the nitrates under 20 or so and then add fish. If you aren't going to be adding fish within 24 hours, add ammonia. Good luck and congrats!

Ok! I'll let you all know how it goes. We can't get fish until Monday so we're thinking tomorrow morning we'll do a water change, dose amonia and if all looks good 24 hours later (Monday) we'll get our fish.

There were two new pieces of wood that I suspected were leeching the tanins and I didn't put them back in the tank but the water is still yellow. Hopefully the water changes will help because I'm not one that likes it. :D

Should I put excel in the water before or after we get the fish? or does it matter?
