View Full Version : Stripped Catfish, anyone ever seen?

Hello all, I have a striped catfish, pleco I guess... but the LFS insisted on calling it a catfish instead of pleco... It's sorta of a knock off on a zebra, alot cheaper tho, But I havent seen anyone on here talk about one, so do any of us except me have a stripped catfish? if so do you have a pic to make sure we are on the same page, I will hook up a hood lamp today and try to get some pics myself.... TIA

Sounds like a striped raphael (Platydoras costatus) if it has tons of lil spikeys along the sides. These are not plecos in any way, shape, or form. www.plantecatfish.com listed them as their July 1999 catfish of the month.
Their care is similar to cory care (well, really really big corys....) They like to hang out groups, eat a wide variety of meaty sinking foods, and need tons of hidey spots. They are mostly nocturnal (read only see them occasionally during night feedings or if I creep up and watch the tank long after the lights switch off....).

I really dont think thats it, very very simalar, mine looks more like a pleco! and the stripes R a little different not very much at all

How large is your pleco, errr catfish?
What colour stripes? Peckoltia vittatta?

I have about 75 stripped catfish in my pond and several Mekong River Catfish.
Inaddition, I have 2 mekong river cats and 2 stripped cat plus a white phase stripped cat in my aquarium. I can identify your catfish if I have a photo..
There are however, a strip catfish which looks like a sucker, but it is not the same as the asian stripped catfish which is called a Pla Sawai in Thai.
