I live in Mich and this summer set up a small pond ( about 150 - 175 gall ). I have some green hair algae and have asked about it and people say that this is normal to an extent. I was just reading a thread by fish guru on pond maintence. It is mentioned in there not to do a complete water change, so my question is what to do during the winter. I have planned on bringing in the fish & plants and emptying the water but I am now confused as to what to do with the water. Thanks in advance for any advise.

If you plan to bring the fish and plants inside and drain the pond for the winter - what is the question? The water can go to your garden or down the drain. Your choice.

please,no question is a dumb question, only the one you did not ask.

Actually, I think it's a good question. Because I don't know the answer. :lol2: I can see why you are concerned about draining the pond after reading it shouldn't be done. But I'm not sure it's necessary to drain the whole pond and start over. I am thinking it might be better to do a 30% water change in the spring, and then check the parameters. But there are so many factors involved. I assume you will shut off the pump for the winter? And it will freeze over. But without the fish, will there still be trapped gases?

The question is now that I have read in the other topic not to empty it, do I drain any of it, with the snow & freezing water some of the water will overflow, do I empty part of it out and if so how much will be too much?

why are you emptying it?

well, I was not sure what the winter would do to the water by freezing or the added leaves that did not get picked out or anything else that mother nature would throw our way.

the question is not where to drain the water but should I ? as I mentioned that my thought was to drain it before I read the topic about pond maintence by fish guru and some of the answer in his thread. when this was mentioned I decided to ask about it and not to hijack his thread.

I will be shutting down the pump and I was also curious about any gases that would be trapped in the water when the water freezes.
Thanks for the information everyone

i'm fairly certain (as ive never heard of anyone doing this anyway) that your pond will be just fine to freeze over for the winter (without fish in it, of course ;))

My neighbor does a thorough cleaning after she removes the fish and the pump. Whatever water is left in there afterward stays in there until spring thaw at which time she cleans again, tops off the water and tosses fish and pump back in.
