Cool fish I have never seen them in an albino form. What size tank are they in? also do they still have the silver color? its hard to tell from the pic.

Nice Healthy Looking Tinfoils..... what makes those Albino? I have 2 that are getting a little too big for my 90gal but I'm finding them hard to part with. Anyway, yours seem to have some color on the tails and look roughly (in shape anyway) like mine and I was wondering what the difference is?

This is the tank they are in: A 60 Gallon tank (2 pics..same tank).
The webcam talkes really bad photos. The fish are PURE WHITE with RED eyes and red in the fins. Normal tinfoils are SILVER with black and red in the fins.

Albino tinfoils are the same as the normoal variety EXCEPT they are albino. When I bought them a year ago (2 inches) they did not have any red in the fins and I was hoping they wouldnt get any..but they did. The webcam sucks. Like I said before, In reality they are PURE white with red eyes. IMO, alot prettier then the normal version. BUT your 2 tinfoils should be fine in a 90 gallon..you dont need to get rid of them. My dad had 3 in his tank for 10 years with no stunting problems (grew to 8-10 inches)

Aren't albinos suppose to have no colour other than white except in the eyes? Are they the ones that have been debated about being stunted or not?

These are mine...he has the normal kind. Albino is a genetic flaw. And occurs RARELY in nature. These albinos were bred for this trait. I hardly ever see these guys in store. The only time I did see albino tinfoils was when I bought them. They had a tank with 10 of them. The only color they have is red in the fins, other then that, they are pure white with red eyes.
Slip is more of the scientific mind so you can ask why a albino fish has red in the fins.

I once posted a pic of these, as I have three. They are not albinos, but are called golden tin foil barbs. They can typically be found at Petsmart and are not rare at all, sorry. I happened upon mine at Wal-Mart, where I too thought they were an albino form. Several senior members here straightened me out.

I think they are pseudo albinos, they have or lack melanin or something, not sure. But those that look like albinos but are not usually don't have red eyes

Golden tinfoils barbs. Yes I heard of them. Very nice fish. These are not them though. These are Called albino tinfoil barbs. Not only did the LFS said (which many are wrong), but another website mentioned these were albino tinfoil barbs. Just a question: WHY would they name a PURE WHITE RED EYES Fish.. a GOLDEN tinfoil barb? I would think it would have a golden cast to it.. I will research this. ABOUT being rare. I will BET you a MILLION dollars there is no way you can find these fish at a walmart. If you think these are golden tinfoils...back up your claim...
Just found this Link:
http://www.goldenline.co.uk/images/A2BSG.jpg
This is a golden tinfoil barb=gold cast to it and BLACK eyes.
Here is the list of all tinfoils that i found:
Tinfoil Barb- common
Redtail Tinfoil Barb- common
Golden Tinfoil Barb- not mine! check the link! common? rare?
Glass Tinfoil Barb- Rare!!!
Albino Redtail Tinfoil Barb- This is what I have!!!! Rare?
Black Eye Albino Tinfoil Barb- Rare?

Okay, conceded, if yours are not goldens, then neither are mine!! Mine are about two years old, and they did come from Wal-Mart, so if they are indeed albinos, I consider myself lucky to have picked them up for $2.49 each. I have seen them at PetSmart too (I don't know why they would call them gold, except I remember when mine were young, they did have a gold tint to them). Sorry I can't prove that I got them there - they were mixed in with the regular tinfoils, and I bought all that they had in the tank. And I don't have my receipt to collect my million dollars ;)
My pics are not as good - the lighting isn't ideal and they don't sit well for photos.

ps: come to think of it, PetSmart had them labeled goldfoil barbs, not golden tinfoils, not that it means anything

Huh...what size tank are they in? I NEVER seen them in petsmart or walmart. If you seen them, perhaps they got mixed in with the regulars by mistake? I dont know. However, all the LFS stores including petsmart and walmart never carry them..just the regulars. The only one I see selling them is the store I bought them from. Maybe the stores in your area got hold of a wholesaler that accidently mixed in albinos? who knows? But they are more expensive then regulars. I paid 6.00 each. Im not conceded. I Just know what I talking about and these are NOT golden tinfoils. These are albino tinfoils.
PS. How large is your tank? Yours are Nice albinos as well. How big are they now at 2 years old? Mine just turned a year old.
yours look EXACTLY LIKE mine...Then you have Albino tinfoil barbs like mine.

Actually, albinos are only incapable of generating
melanin(dark pigment), all other pigments are intact. This is why you see various albino animals(JBW's barbs included) with the red, yellow & white portions of their pattern intact.

 LOL - I conceded - meaning I admit you are right!!! I'm not saying you are CONCEITED - you just gave me my best laugh today.
Usually, when stuff like that does show up at Wal-Mart, it is completely be accident, so I'm assuming that's what happened. They were mixed in with the regular tinfoils. I also bought a frogmouth cat there that they had no business trying to sell - they couldn't even tell me what it was - he must have come by mistake too.
I looked forever on the net when I got these, looking for a pic. Have you found one?? I didn't have a camera when I first posed my question to the board, so the answer that I got was that they were not albino, but just a color mutation.
Right now, mine are in a 75, soon to go to a 125. They are not much bigger than yours (perhaps their Wal-Mart experience stunted them) - about 8-9".
I will double check next time I'm at PetSmart to see if this is really what they are selling (maybe I'll sneak my camera in :) They are considerably higher priced there.
Happy fishkeeping

I looked all over the net as well. Not much at all. Actually nothing except what i posted. Have you seen the glass tinfoil? I havent..but I am curious what that looks like.
75 gallon into a 125 gallons? YOUR tinfoils must be HAPPY!!! I have a 60 gallon. I would like a bigger tank, but I live on a 2nd floor apartment- so nothing larger then 60 gallons.
Just to let you know: my dad had 3 that lived for 10 years in a 55 gallon without any stunted mishaps. How do you like them? Arent they Great? Are your timid? MIne used to be and may ocasionaly go thrashing everywhere, but normally they are casual swimmers. You should see when the lights come on. ALL the fish go straight to the bottom and hide because they know the tinfoils go crazy when the lights turn on. Does your albinos do the same thing? maybe they are sensitive to light?
ONe more question: Yours is in a larger tank. Do they still "bump" into each other as playing? Mine used to do that untill they got bigger. Now they dont....

Actually, they used to have the 125, and I had to devote it to an RTC. She is getting a 780 g indoor pond, so the tinfoils will get their big tank back then. If they get big enough, or I can partition off part of the pond, maybe they'll move in there, I don't know.
They are very hardy fish - I have two regular tinfoils in addition to the three albinos. Sometimes they get skittish if they hear a noise or I approach the tank too quickly. I keep their lights off - they get enough through the window. They didn't appreciate me flipping on the metal halide to take their pictures earlier. They do school around and 'play'. I have two pangasius cats in with them, and they add to the skittishness. They are destined for the pond eventually too.
I hear the 'your tank is overcrowded' police coming, so I gotta run now. I'll try to get some better pics another day.
I've never even heard of a glass tinfoil!

what do you feed them since They are getting bigger? I feed my 60 gallon tank:
flakes in the morning, cichlid excell floating pellets in the afternoon as well as 3 foodsticks, and brine shrimp at night. Hopefull, all this will make them happy. What do you feed yours Judy?
aquariaddictus

I don't mess with flakes or brine shrimp- the fish are too big. Mine get algae wafers, shrimp pellets, spirulina pellets, and they will eat floating cichlid pellets off the surface if they have nothing else in the tank to choose from. They will also rip a cucumber piece to shreds; I weight it with a sinker and let them go at it. I've tried, as much as possible, to get any of my fish that will eat veggies to do so. My late pacus ate cocktail tomatoes and grapes. I only feed once a day, and sometimes miss a day.
You won't believe this - I gotta make a trip to Wal-Mart - NOW. There is no food in this house (human food) and I have guests coming tomorrow. I'll see if the distributor snuck in any albinos ;)

Good Morning, JBW. Well no albinos at Wal-Mart last night, and for the first time I can remember, they had the fish lights OFF at midnight, actually letting the poor things get some downtime. This was another of my great gripes with the place.
Happy Thankgiving - a day off here means tank cleaning/moving - I have to get all my tanks to the other end of the basement, as we have someone coming to start finishing off a great room soon. Two down, three to go, including two 75s.

I am envious of your GREAT aquariums. Have a happy thanksgiving! If you have have any questions on my albino tinfoils, feel free to ask....or can ask you any questions? enjoy....
one question: You do keep them in a large enough tank and they are 2 years old. How big are they? ( i think you mentioned this earlier..). You feed them enough food. IM wondering how big they are going to get?some poeple say 14 inches. My dad had his for 10+ years and only grew about 8-9 inches in a 55 gallon. They are fast growers (being well fed) and at the age of 2 years (yours is 8 inches i think?) maybe this is biggest it gets in tanks?
MIne is a year old and at 8 inches (from fin to tip of nose)
yours is 2 years old and about the same size.
so what do you think? what about maybe albinos dont grow so big?

One thing about my tinfoils and I hope soneone can help. They LOVE to Rocket themelves for food at the top of the tank. They do get the food, but in the meanwhile, they do hurt there "lips" as I do see blood in the lip once in a while. Thanks

That's why I use sinking food - they seem to do better when it has to pass in front of their noses anyway.

Sorry about the delay,
Do you have a pic of the Glass tinfoil barb? I NEVER seen one in any fish store here in los angeles. They are very hard to come by.
Another variety that is nice is the Golden Tinfoil...
You are lucky if you have a glass tinfoil..if thats what you have.
PLEASE, Oh PLEASE, send a pic. I would Love to see the pic!
Please ignore the folks here that tend to disregard the ability of getting these types of tinfoils. I have yet to see someone post a pic of an albino or any other type of hard to get tinfoil at a walmart.....
