I went to the LFS to buy some plants today and after about 45 min. (its a bit of a drive) I came home, opened my plant bag, and found this somehow surviving in about 2 inches of water at the bottom. My google search didn't give me anything (I guess "pleco with a long thin tail" isn't good enough :silly:) so I was hoping someone could ID it for me so I can determine if I should return it or not.
Thanks!

Possible farowella. I think that is how you spell it. Let the pros jump in for a positive id though. But that might give you a starting point of a search.

that narrows it down a bit! And if I was going to add it to my tank (I certainly have enuogh algae right now to make it happy), would it get along with cories?

If it is a Farowella, then thats a pretty expensive hitchhiker..
Looks like a Rineloricaria parva to me.

I am far from an expert. My guess is the common name for this fish would be some kind of Whiptail catfish. Scientifically that would be in the "Loricariidae" family. Although the Farlo is in the same family I don't think it is a Farlo cause they have the "Pinocchio" thing going on...lol Exactly which one I'm not sure. Take a pic of its belly and one from the top and post it on one of the catfish forums and somone will know for sure. Good Luck!!!
Rineloricaria parva are one of the plecos often available in the trade but they are still overlooked by most due to their drab coloration.

yea, it's definitely not a farlowella; farlo.s have the long, pointed rostrums.
i'm with tanks4themem on this one. i am certain it's a whiptail. they go anwhere from $5 to $8 at LFSs, so lucky you! i'm jealous! :)

Same thing happened to me with a banjo catfish. I purchased a sword from walmart , got home, and that was in the bag with the plant..

thats a great fish. It looks exactly like mine. They are very fun to watch, expecially when they "walk" around the tank on their fins. Good luck

It looks like it is close to a Royal Farlowella, which doesn't have the Pinocchio nose like most farlowellas. However, the Royal Farlowella has a really, really long tail. The upper portion and lower portion of the tail usually extend over an inch. I have 3 adult Royal Farlowellas and 3 fry at the moment. I'm hoping the fry pull through and I end up with 6 adults. The adults in the display tank breed pretty regularly.

i'm pretty sure it's loricariidae

I would probably go with you on that, because it doesn't look like the head and color are exactly right for a Royal Farlowella.
