I read somewhere that Pterophyllum scalare and Pterophyllum altum do not breed.

Well, I have one of each in my 50gal tank and, by a stroke of luck, they turned out to be a pair, with the P. scalare male.

They have been laying eggs every three weeks or so, but I never paid any attention to that, knowing what I read before.

However, my curiosity got the better of me, particularly as the eggs laid last Sunday survived until today, Tuesday! So, I decided to take the eggs out (in a sword plant leaf) and transferred them to a fish bowl with water mixed with half a capsule of tetracycline, and aerated.

I'll just have to see what happens to these eggs.

The eggs:

The P. altum "mom":

Are the eggs fertile? Are you prepared to feed the fry?

Your "P. altum" looks like a P. scalare to me. No brown bars nor sharp indentation on its head to say it's a P. altum. How much did you pay for it? Breeding between both is possible.

:iagree: Altums have a distinct physical difference from Scalare.
your Altum appears to be Scalare.

do you have a better pic of the silver?

it could be a wild Scalare..

btw aeration and either methylene blue or hydrogen peroxide are used as anti fungal agents.. i would not use tetracycline

they are both scalare...altums have a much more tapered look to them.
