Why would a whiptail pleco NOT eat algae? Ours loves to suck on the rocks in our tank, but we've NEVER seen them on the glass - not in over a year that we've had them. I thought all plecos were algae eaters to some extent? Am i wrong and they are just bottom feeders? Our common pleco and bristlenose are ALWAYS on the glass cleaning away.

Not all plecos eat algae. Some are carnivores, some are omnivores, some are wood eaters. I think this confirms my suspicion that my Rineloricaria parva never eats algae at all except the Sturisoma panamense.

There are tons of plecs that only eat meat. Many eat wood too. You should check out www.planetcatfish.com for a profile of your whiptail. They have a lot of good and accurate info on many, many species.
