Ok, the 20g has been doing good. Just did weekly WC and cleaning. I still have the 5g running. I've been feeding it with sun dried shrimp and blood worms to hopefully keep the filter going. I tested it this morning and the params are still in check the nitrate is high, but with a WC I believe it would be ok:

temp 78
nitrate 25
nitrate 0
ammonia 0

What would U guys do with it? I really don't want to keep it running with nothing in it, but I really don't want to clean it out either in case something goes wrong with the 20g....

IDEAS?

Looking for fish suggestions?

Is there good lighting on it?

You could always get a small frag of Tubastrea (sun coral) to keep in there, and start a small non-photosynthetic coral tank. With all the feeding needs, there'd be some diligent maintenance required, but it can still be enjoyable.

Well probably in the next few weeks I want to get a bigger tank say maybe a 30g or 40g. I have some soft coral in my 20g, and plan on getting a few shrooms this weekend for it.

The 5g doesn't have any LR just the HOB. Would a firefish be OK, and maybe a goby?

I just want some ideas on a fish or two. Or is it worth it?

Thanks,
Mike

You could do a goby, but probably not a firefish. Firefish are small, but they need more space to swim. A ten would be minimum for a firefish.

No firefish IMO. Try a clown goby... that's about the only fish I can think of to keep in a 5.

Too be honest I wouldn't put a fish in a 5 gal. I agree with FSN's suggestion of a sun coral. They do require regular feedings but they're great to watch. You cold also stick a couple of sexy shrimp in there, they're cute.

I'd also consider whether or not the 5 gal will be of any use to you in case of emergency as the fish you choose for a 20gal wold not be happy in a 5gal. JMO:)

Yeah thinking that too! I think I'm just going to get rid of it. It was a pain taking care of it with WC's every few days with one fish. I might just tank the filter out and put it in my HOB incase I need a hospital tank or quarartine something later!

Thanks,

Mike

I have to admit I had a 5gal tank that I bought because it was a bargain. After trying to think of what to put in it for a few weeks I settled on making it a frag tank, but I got bored with all the top offs and water changes that I've stripped it down and it's now sitting in the garage! It might come in handy one day........

This one housed my clown for almost 2 months while the 20g was cycling. It was easy to keep the params in check, but nitrate would be 20 or 25 in 2-3 days after a WC and I did 50% wc's every 2-3 days! I went through salt mix like U wouldn't believe. I'll break it down and clean real good with vinegar and let it rest for awhile :)

If you ever did need it "in case of emergency, you could always put the hob on the 20 and let it run. It would add to your flow and keep the bacteria in it alive, then if you needed you could set up the 5 without having to cycle. But this of course would be in case of emergency, as the 5 will not be big enough for your fish. Also if you decided to use it for coral or for a goby or something in the future, you would not need to cycle.HTH Scott
