Yay!! After much impatience on my part, my pair finally spawned what looks to be at least 100 eggs. I have a couple questions for all you convict experts since this is my first time. I plan on keeping them for healthier feeders for my oscar. I'm glad the female is beating up on the male. She just makes sure he doesn't get too close.

When can I take them out?

If I leave them with the parents do I need to feed them? (I know what I need to feed them but i though it seemed difficult since they were still with their protective parents.

What size is considered feeder fish size and how many could I feed to my 8 inch oscar at this size?

PS. Pics will be coming soon!

I always fed mine crushed flake,Hikari 1st bites and frozen brine shrimp. Usually kept them about 2 months before using as feeders at first but the convicts are so prolific that I'd have different age fry in the tank at all times. I ended up just grabbing a net full every few days and throwing them into my planted tank with the bichirs and leaf fish. Most were eaten pretty quickly but the ninjas could hide out for a few weeks.

Some pics of my pair

Sorry about the reflections and the fuzziness of the pics but here are a couple pics of my pair and you can sort of see the eggs. The tank is newly rescaped. The male is in the last pic.

Nice looking tank.
If you have free swimmers in there make sure you use a prefilter on any intakes of filters.
Good luck.

Yeah I put thin stockings over the filter intakes so the babies won't get sucked up.

Very Nice!! As soon as the pair lay again, thatw when the first spawn is at danger. They are relatively easy to raise, I started with about 75 eggs and got about 15 fry, not bad for my first spawn of any kind of fish!

I'm still trying to get mine to pair up without the male harrassing the female into hiding. It's been a challenge. I can't wait for fry also as I also have an Oscar to feed.

good job!!!! i like your tank deco!!

as for answering your questions

about 2-3 months old

yes your going to need to feed them, try algae wafers the parents break the wafer up in to pieces that the fry can pick at

2in is a good size but even 1in will do

Thanks guys! UPDATE: Well its been about 2 days and we've got FRESH wrigglers. LOL! They look like vibrating tadpoles!

i had the same plan as you one time back in the day, and after my first spawn i got about 100 little fry then when they were about 1/8th inch the power went out for a couple weeks and lost pretty much all of them. After that i gave up but i think i might get back into it for treats for my ck, oscar, and aro
