Hi! I was in a LFS today and saw a few angels in a tank and I noticed the Black ones to be more shy than the other ones. I asked a few people I know and they said they tend to be more shy and finicky than the common or koi angels. I totally ignore the matter but I'm curious now; Is this true?

hmmm, I have black ones with a little white, and they seem normal, I had a white one and it was extremely shy, I dont know much about them to say any more.

So maybe is in those two extremes...maybe they messed up with genetics and to get to those strains (black or white), an unexpected result was make them shyer and probably weaker. Anyone who could shine more light feel free!
Black angels are more challenging than most commonly available strains of angels to keep. Think twice before you buy them.:)

Not so much black angels but DD(double dose) Black angels.
all are P.Scalare just different color morphs of the same species. however, the black(particularly DD) have been known to have some health issues.
they can be more challenging to maintain.

And how can you tell a normal black and a double dose black apart in a LFS? What is the difference? Could you post a link to pics or some pics? Thanks!

FYI DD black refers to the allele's ..a dd black got 1 from each parent which in essence increases the likelihood of the black gene
so it would be a black angel with a black allele from each parent.
this strain is notorious for being weak as well as black angels in general.
but not impossible to maintain.

Thanks, you should have explained it in genetics in the first place. Your first post led me to think the difference was merely physical; after all...you said: "all are P.Scalare just DIFFERENT COLOR MORPHS of the same species". But alright, maybe I should have looked at it with science in mind, so paraphrasing: both homozygous and heterozygous black are weak but not impossible to maintain. But homozygous blacks are weaker than heterozygous.

They are a bit sensitive to water quality. I have loss three out of nine over the last 90 days...

Nice piece of information. Frequent PWC. Thanks!

Bob, I have been informed of someone in who's experience with black angels lost a few on PWC. Now how big or small a water change should be in order to not affect these? What measures should be taken? Thanks.

Interesting info on black angels. I have a black male that is about 2 years old that has done incredibly well. Perhaps if I had known he "could" be difficult to keep I might not have paid the $24.95 to get him. He is a beauty! Definitely NOT shy. He lives with a black and white superveil female (he is a standard tail). I keep hoping the two will make some babies. He gets a little agressive when she begins to prep for laying eggs.

Guess I've been lucky so far. I bout 6 DD's on Aquabid, got them July 2nd and haven't lost any. Mine aggresively beg for food, even eat pellets ment for ABN.
