Today I bought a new heater for my 30 gallon since the one I had was 1 of those preset Wal-Mart specials.
Tonight I look in to check the temp and even though i set it at 80 the thermometer is reading closer to 82 or 83.
Is this to warm for my Black Convicts? Also in the tank are 4 Zebra Danios. I can turn the heat back down if needed as I'm not sure if this is a little to warm for comfortable fish.

Yeah, turn it down a little. My heaters tend to read 2 or 3 degrees off one direction or the other. You have to fiddle with it to get the temp right.

well I turned it down just a little and I'll check it again in the morning and if it still looks higher then 80 I will once again turn it down more. I really dont want it to be higher then 80 so I will keep checking it until I have it right.

I heard for eggs they have to have it 80? I'm trying to breed a pair of Convicts. Even the Wal-Mart cheapy is set at 78 and wont go below that. this morning I turned it down more because my thermometer is saying 82 and I know that is to warm so it is little by little being turned down. Everwhere I look and almost every book I have read is telling me a different temperature for these fish. What do I listen to?
Also there are 4 Zebra danios in the tank.

the heater may not be the only thing reading the wrong temp
is the thermometer in the tank.
get a second one and check it.
often you may find the thermometers may read different.
you may have to take a median temp
