What fish and inverts for a 40gall???

LOL, that is a looong list. Probably easier to list the ones that you can't have in a 40, tangs, most predator fish, large angels, large wrasses come to mind for ones you couldn't do.

You can choose from hundreds of types of gobies, blennies, clowns, some dwarf angels, dartfish, small wrasses, small hawkfish to name a few. Obviously you can't have too many fish in that size, but you could have a clown, angel, a couple gobies, and a blenny in that size tank if added over the period of several months. Personally I like wrasses over clowns and would pick a wrasse instead, but most people want a clown in a sw tank, especially in a new tank, and they are hardy and good beginner fish.

I already have 3 snails, 2 hermit crabs, a cleaner shrimp and a blood shrimp/fireshrimp and a flame angel.

Would i be okm adding the following?

5 snails,
4 shrimps,
5 hermit crabs,
2 Kaudern Cardinals,
2 Black Percula Clowns,
1 yellow clown Goby,
2 damsels (either sergen major or blue velvet).

I would like a butterfly fish but having read about them my tank is too small, also for tangs but i would sooner keep a happy healthy environment and not have these if they would be a problem.

Any suggestions/comments?

Everything on the list sounds good except for the last item. Definately skip the 2 damsels. Also, just an FYI, clown gobies are not reef safe, so if in the future you decide to try corals like LPS and SPS then you will have to get rid of that fish, but it will be fine with softie corals like zoas, mushrooms, star polys, leathers, xenia, etc.

I would recommend getting two dartfish (firefish) instead of the 2 damsels, or 1 nice wrasse.

Remember, add those fish over the period of a few months, not all at once, and know that list will pretty much max out your tank depending on your filtration/live rock setup.

Very maxed out. It is a large fish load, so consider how big and how frequent your water changes may have to be. It will take a very well thought out system to keep the nitrates down with that fish load. I keep similar fish, minus two, in my 55 with a reasonable amount of maintenance. If you are like many who spend alot of time working on thier tanks wheather they need it or not, it should'nt be a problem.

Agreed, that bioload will require very regular water changes. That being said, I was able to keep 12 fish in a 29G for many many years without problems, but I did have a sump/refugium and I did 5G a day in water changes to keep the nitrates at zero. It all depends on how much work your willing to do on the tank. 5G a day used to take me less than 5 minutes to do and I figured if I can't spend a total of 10 minutes a day working on my aquarium (water change, skimmer cleaning, feeding) then I am in the wrong hobby.
