ok i have no clue what this is but I need something better than what I have, I love my aquaclear 50g I have on my 20g shrimp/snail tank but I have lost a few shrimp even with the sponge on the filter intake, tried pantyhose, netting, a bunch of things, either they get caught, stick to it, or get sucked up.
I heard that sponge filters are good, what are they, how much are they and how good are they at filtration?
ALSO WHAT ABOUT THIS ONE:

Sponge ilters are very good, i use them in a lot of my tanks but they will only work if you leave them running 24/7.

Sponges are perfect for your needs. That one you posted looks fine. Lots of surface area.

Here's the one I use:

They're cheap and work great. The shrimp seem to love them, anyway :)

Sponge filters are great, I have them in every tank. It's always good to have a few pre-seeded sponge filters on hand in case you need to set up another tank. Instant tank cycling !

Good luck with the one you got !
