Hey all I have a 27 gal reef tank with no sump so a hob skimmer. It does a pretty decent job but the sponge get gross way too fast. Does it really need to be on there. Wouldn't larger bits of crud still get skimmed. Sorry if this seems stupid lol.
Thanks

It depends on the strainer on the pump. I have a Seaclone 100 and many people have modified it to increase flow by simply removing the sponge on the intake strainer. This is fine I guess (I have not done this) but it does pose a risk to many inverts that get too close (like anemones).

I too have the seaclone 100. The strainer looks reasonably fine enough that nobody would get sucked in.
