recently bought a Nova Extreme T5 light fixture for my 55 gallon freshwater aquarium. First of all, I realize that this fixture is meant for saltwater, but I have a planted tank and I really needed a good lighting system.

Ok, my first question is this. The fixture came with two 10,000k bulbs and two actinic bulbs. I am wondering what a good option would be for bulb combinations. I have heard that 6700k is optimal, and I've also read that combining 6700k and 3000k is good as well. Any other input would be great. If possible, I'd like something that would really make the fish "pop."

My other question is, the fan on the unit is extremely loud. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how I might make it quieter.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out.

I'd recommend a 10,000k and 6700k mixture, I've never seen or heard of a 3000k and 6700k blend before, also another option is the colormax bulb, they're meant to make the fish and plants look more attractive, but I cant comment on how effective they are at growing plants.

As for the fan noise, its kind of expected from high-power lighting.

if your brave enough, replace the fan. Unless its ball bearing fans (almost unheard of) its not greasable.
