I just received a very nice order of anubias v. nana from LiveAquaria and will be placing them in my Lake Tanganyika tank to flesh out some of the smaller central planted area. The speciemens that arrived are extremely healthy (ready to bloom in fact) and are completely potted..... there is no rhizome visible at all as it appears it is buried deep inside the cotton mass and is totally root bound.

Any ideas for the best way to plant these beauties? Can they simply be dropped into the substrate since the rhizome is (and has been) potted with no apparent distress of any kind? Digging through the cotton will destroy the branch architecture and root structure for sure.

I would take it out of the wool for sure, most places grow their anubias emersed so not sure if the same case goes for the rhizome when its growth that way.. But either way take it out and use some cotton thread to try and remake that look it had in the pot.

Best way for me to take them out of the pot was to squeeze it at the bottom so the plant rises, then just take the wool and split it, wash it under the sink to get most of the bits out

i planted my anubias straight into the gravel and had great success with them.. you can also tie them to a piece of wood. :)

I agree with BK and Msj, if the roots are growing through the pot then I just cut the pot away and the wool will usually fall away. Whatever is left I just rinse under the sink sprayer. The rhizome and roots actually add a nice bit of structure to the look of the plant, that is one of my favorite things about anubias. Cant wait for pics!
