Ok, I am really beginning to think that the plant I've been trying to ID is a water lilly of some sort.

No flower at this point, but the thing has taken over my 5 gallon. I'm probably going to have to remove it and put it somewhere else. I don't really know if I have room in my 40 gallon, so maybe someone here would like it. It's gorgeous, but very big.

I've been trying to research it, but all the pictures that I find are of the flowers, not of the leaves, which is what I really need. Anyone know where to find pictures of the leaves of water lilies??

I *think* it might be a WILLIAM MCLANE Purple Day Blooming Lily. But I'm not entirely positive.

Just wondering if anyone else might have some info that could help me better ID it.

Of the 7 *very large* leaves on it, 3 are floating like lilies would. The 4th is almost to the top of the water and will be floating like the rest and the other 3 are just started, so haven't grown quite that tall. But it's huge. Spread all over the top of my aquarium, and with really really long stems squiggling through my aquarium since there obviously isn't enough depth in the aquarium to accommodate the height that it is apparently suited to.

All this from one of them teeny "betta bulb" packages. LOL

Anyhow, I took more pictures of it, because the video I took of my betta and posted on here obviously didn't help. Lots of people were suggesting it was an Anubis of some sort, but it definitely isn't.

The leaves are averaging about 3-6" in length and about 3" across at the base where they are widest.

I've attached a picture of the base of the plant (and Sapphire, who is playing in it), as well as a picture of the top of the tank, looking at one of the floating leaves from the plant. Hopefully those help??

my first guess would be a green tiger lotus..
I think lillys have almost round leaves.

Of course when it blooms, it will be much easier to tell..

Then again apparently it produces different kinds of leaves??

I am new to this whole planted aquarium thing and didn't know plants would do this. LOL

One site says to pinch off all the floating leaves and it should only produce the ones that stay under water. Anyone know if that is accurate?

I have four different identifications of this species. You will start to notice that not all the leaves will be exactly the same shape all the time. This plant is trainable, can be kept short and bushy or tall w/broad leaves.

hmmm...

Well I'm going to keep cutting it back, but if it gets too crazy, I will have to remove it and either put it in the 40 gallon or find someone who wants it.

For the time being I will leave it where it is, and just cut it back whenever I need to. i like the way it looks, and my betta loves to lay on the big leaves, so hopefully it will be able to stay there for a while anyhow.

If it does get to the point that I need to remove it, what would a good plant with broad leaves that will be OK in a small setup be? Something the betta can lounge on, but that won't take over?
