hello, we are new to this site, hope we can learn more than we already know. so, we have had our 72 gallon bowfront for 4 years now and a 32 gallon corner for 2. most of our original fish are still in the 72 gal. (2 lepuranus, 2 bala, 1 clown loach, 1 pink tailed something, 2 chinese algae eaters). anyway we always seem to have green scum on the bottom of our glass lid. is it because our water level is too high and the hot lamps are doing it? I was thinking of getting a new light, like those that stand above the tank,http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=12772. also how do you really know how much light wattage you need? and will the lunar lighting be beneficial to our fish if we get that light?

I'd ask the same as MG... also, the green scum may be from water from the tank splashing onto it

no live plants in the tank at all. the light we have now is just the standard sit on the glass lid hood light with 2 bulbs in it

hmm, seems like it may just be algae

With the set up that you are showing to buy, you might be asking for algae.
I clean my glass top every other week.
How old are your bulbs now?
I think they are only good for 6 months.
You can ask on planted forum.

[1] Probably neither.
Remove the lid and clean the top and bottom with water and table salt*.
Rinse the lid thoroughly.
Note how clear the lid is?
Also if you have acrylic panels under the lights but above the lid them clean if accordingly.

[2] IMHO this would be a waste of $.
Not only will you have algae on the lower surface of the lid but you will have minor algae on the upper surface of the lid and the lower surface of the acrylic panel beneath the lights.
You will also have some "scum" on the surfaces of the acrylic panel as well as the mild "scum" which you are now experiencing on the upper and lower surfaces of your lid.

[3] I do not have much of a clue here except that my Corys and BN Plecos appear (very qualitative) to enjoy the blue and white LED's which I turn on at night.

*This will be necessary periodically and is just part of keeping fish.
