At my work we have had some white zoanthids appear. They look to be attached to the other zoanthids on the rock. The owner swears there were only 6, there are now 9. I do not have pictures of it to double check if they are new growth or if they used to have color. I never saw any little white ones growing in so I think it is old ones loasing color. They are under T5HO.
Do they bleach?
What could be going wrong?
Is it possible there is nothing wrong and these are just a new type?

Yes, zoas do bleach, seen it first hand when I neglected by frag tank for a few weeks without feeding. Also possible they could just be white, seen a few "rare" ones that have white skirts but the mouth still has color.

PICS!
They did not come out as clear as I thought they did. The owner swears there were 6 and there are now 9. I never saw any small white buds coming up so I find it hard to beleive that we all of a sudden have healthy white zoanthid polyps. What all could cause bleaching?

I remember seeing a picture of come colonial white polyps, can't remember if they were zoas or palys, and can't remember where I saw the pic - possibly on RC, but maybe here. I've been trying to find it but haven't been successful yet.

I dont think those are bleached, of course the pic isnt all that great, but with bleaching they tend to be more transparent. keep em in light they will color fairly fast if they are just bleached. But i dont think so, there is a orange skirt zoo right in the middle of them, surely if they had been covered/diseased that one would have fell victim as well.
cut me a couple off and ill do some experiments and let u know how they come out haha!

I stopped working there, they looked the same for the two months I was there. As far as I know they are still fine. They do share their base with the healthy, colored, adjacent polyps.
I have a couple white zoas / palys growing amongst other seemingly healthy zoas / palys that have color to them. Is it possible that they are simply lacking zooxanthellae for some reason and are surviving by particle feeding alone? I should look and see if I can frag off one or two without damaging them and move them to another tank or another location in the same tank.

Zoanthids get almost all their energy from photosynthesis, so I doubt they would last at all without zooxanthellate algae.
