hi all
i am looking at buying a pair (male-female).
a few questions:
will they be alright by themselves in a 40 gallon?
are there any other possible tankmates for them in a 40 gallon?
is a mixture of pellets for rift lake cichlids and blood worms a good diet?
will they eat plants?
cheers thanks for your help

i would put in a trio or 4some so that the male mate would chase off the others to protect his female if no on the extra lelupi's than you could add some julidochromis or brichardi's i would place quite a few rocks in the setup to provide tons of hidey holes and retreats aye, but if you just want that one pair in the tank than that would be ok as well, best wishes my friend..

sorry about that, well diet is basically your call i feed mine alot of different food items i feed flakes, frozens, pellets, live foods like live brine, live bloods, live mosquito larva, live black worms and occasional deformed fry to cull, i just want them to have a wide range of food items, different varieties of each, plants i say yes and if you look at my two tanks under pittbulls photos you will see alot of plants in my setups but this works for me you might not like it and others as well but it can be done and i stay with the lower light level plants, as for mbuna again a judgement call, i have had success with some peacocks with tanganyika's but i only kept male specimens i have seen hobbyist place all three african lakes species together and they said it worked, i have 5 lelupi's in a 120gal with frontosa, brichardi's and black calvus all are fine and actually the only problem i have is that the lelupi's all come together to test their territories boundries but soon they scatter back to their own spots..

ok thanks a lot.thats a couple of great tanks you have there.i usually like to keep to a biotype but the reason i asked about the mbuna is becasue in new zealand african cichlids are few and far between.even yellow labs are hard to come by.

wow, no worries aye yeah i had a good friend here that worked with me he was a new zealander aye and stated the same issue he was always talking fish with me, and yellow labs here in my area are like guppies.

I keep a leilupi in a mostly mbuna tank and it does fine. Was supposed to be a male but it regularly lays eggs so either I deserve the nobel prize for fishology or...
