No Where Kansas
I have 4 guppies, 3 males and a female.

They are of breeding size and I was just wondering how I knew if the female was pregnant. I know she has a big belly but is that the only sign?

Anyone got some reference pics?

Thanks in advance for the help.

The gravid will turn from black to a lighter color as well. Also if you have 1 female and 3 males, they will harass her to death to breed with her. You need a 3f-1m ratio.

Back near the anal fins you will see a dark spot on each side. That is known as the gravid spot. If your fish doesn't have one it is either not a guppy or not female.

If you have a female with a male, its pregnant. You should really get rid of some males,or get more females. If her gravid spot is very dark, and she isn't eating and hiding, she is probably ready to give birth. If you want to keep the fry set up a fry tank, and put the female in there until she gives birth. If you aren't wanting the fry, just leave her alone. The males and herself will take care of the fry for you.

Well ATM I have a single cory ( I know I need more but my tank went through a small cycle after I switched to using hardwater and killed the other 3). I also have 4 danios and the 4 guppies. I think I am nearing overstocked for my 13gallon tank.

How many females do I need for 4 males?

And how many will fit in a 5g? I am moving my Whites tree frog to his new home soon (20g tall) and I will have the 5g for the guppies.

Gravid = correct term for a pregnant livebearer. In with males = pregnant. They have three life phases:

1. Juvenile
2. Pregnant
3. Dead.

Thanks for the info Karl.

It turns out that i have 1 male and 2 females. My other male disappeared the other day while my brother was here. Wonder what happened there.

they are both gravid.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

I didn't know that females could have any color but mine do so I guess they do.

The gravid spot is brownish black. And they have huge white bellies. One has dark fins with small yellow spots and one has just dark fins.

The male though has a snakeskin body and leopard print on all of his fins.

Thanks for the info agian.

I think i will keep 8 in my 5g.

6 females 2 males.

If it was planted would that be ok?
