:nilly:I found some sites that do not have outrageous prices for LED lighting. I think LED is the next big thing in lighting, especially for aquarium use. They are international sites, but still there are some pretty good prices. They would work for almost any type of application. They are not advertised for aquarium use, but I am sure you could adapt them. :grinyes:
I have the same thread for the Freshwater Equipment forum as well.

LED lights are great for aquarium use. i know a couple people who have them on their reef tanks and it looks great, but the problem with LED lights is just the price. until the price comes down to where the normal person can afford they wont be a real option for a lot of people. like the 2 people i know that use them make $250,000 a year! while i'm in college and make $15,000 a year. so i simply can not afford to buy LED lights.

There are also several issues with the fixtures out now, such as the arrays going out much (MUCH) quicker than advertised. I believe that LED array systems will be a very quality product in the next few years. As far as making your own, I suggest you research how companies make their fixtures. You may also want to invest in a PAR meter to assess how well you are doing.
