Hello everyone! Just wanted to update everyone with the developments of my 5 juvie discus that i got from Kenny last week. For now I keep them in a 29 gallon grow out tank afterwich they will be transferred to my 55 gal planted tank.
The Water parameters on my tank:
Ph: 7
temp 86 F
dGH: 5ppm
dKH: 1 (my tap water is very soft) i have a question about this in my old thread
http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=167422&page=2
ammonia: 0
nitrate: 20 ppm
nitrite: .2 ppm
I feeed them at least 4-5 times a day alternating them with frozen blood worms, frozen turkey heart, tetra bits and sometimes omega one flakes. From what I have observed so far is that they really like the Frozen blood worms. I do 50 % water changes every other day. Also the tank has a thin layer of gravel on the bottom some plastic palnts and a blue background.
The strains that I got where:
Blue Diamond x1
Checkerboard pigeon x1
leopard Discus x2
blue cobalt x1
Well enough of that here are the pics of my babies:
ps: pardon the quality of the pics I used my phone to take them....

Beautiful Marl! Makes me wish I had an empty large tank to fill up!!!
Hey I notice you have one of those worm cups. I didn't think they made them anymore, have not been able to find them. Where did you get it? I have needed one of them forever!

I got mines from Big Al's online. They should still have them I think.

very nice
I did notice tho that you have a small amount of nitrite showing up. you may want to do daily water changes to minimize exposure to the nitrites. prolonged exposure may result in some gill function problems.
hang in there .
btw with larger water changes often you should be fine with the 1 dkh.

I got a cone feeder (worm cup) at that fish place. They had them in stock when I was there yesterday.
Beautiful discus guys! I just got 5 from ken's stock as well (but through popopsfish). I am loving them! What flake/pellet are you guys feeding in addition to the frozen foods?

I feed mine a mix.. i feed color flakes in the am with some colorbits..mine love colorbits. in the afternoon I mix brine, bloodworms and beefheart.
later a bit more colorbits.
any good flake. pellet is fine. I just found mine preferred tetra brand.
If I had NLS around i would give it a try...
I feed young discus atleast 4 X daily.. adults 3 small meals.
hopefully, Deb, will pipe in with some pointers too.

Beautiful dicus Francis! I'm lucky Kenny's fish are very healthy and are always very hungry! Kenny warned me about them :) My biggest concern right now is too not over feed them. Everytime I get near the tank they always think its feeding time.
msjinkzed congrats on your purchase! My discus are not that finicky eaters.. They take in wardley's shrimp pellets, tetra colorbits (i soak them in a little water befroe i give it to them) and the Omega one flakes.
I also supplement them with DIY beef heart fish food with recipies I got from this forum and simplydiscus which i just tailored to things i had available to me at the time I made it. Also Hikari frozen blood worms, and frozen turkey hearts.
I hade to make my own food just to save up on the costs of purchasing the frozen beef heart and bloodworms from the LFS. $5 per pack every week sure does pile up in the long run. :)

My discus never seemed to want to eat tetra colorbits so for a pellet I do New Life Spectrum discus pellets. They are nice and small, the discus blow them out of the gravel, it's funny to watch. They will eat shrimp pellets that I throw in for the cories too. For flakes, they love Ocean Nutrition Brine Shrimp Plus flake (their favorite) which is made up of salmon fillets, plankton, adult brine shrimp, squid, salmon eggs, krill, sea clams, naupli and kelp, it's an excellent flake food; and Ocean Nutrition Formula One Flakes which is salmon fillets, plankton, squid, tuna eggs, seal kelp, adult brine shrimp, and naupili. They get frozen bloodworms daily and live white worms 2 to 3 times a week. They go crazy over the white worms! They just play around with beefheart and preferred the frozen bloodworms so I stopped trying to get them to eat beefheart. All it did was cause me more tank cleaning. They are hungriest when I first get home from work and that is when they get a mix of flakes and pellets. Those young blue cobalts I have still refuse to touch flake or pellets!

I feed my discus a combination of frozen foods(all by Hikari for the added safety and vitamins) as well as Hikari Discus-Bio Gold. Bio-gold is by far the best pellet available for discus(you can tell this by which ingredients are the primary ones). However, it is pricey, which is why I alternate with frozen foods.
