Basically, most sponge filters work the same.

just attach your airline tubing to the filter... and stick it to the inside of the tank.
You can squeest the sponges while its under water water to get all the air our of the foam, and make it sink.. otherwise it will try to float..
Idealy you want the tube to be below the surface ...
adjust the airflow however you like it...
More air, more filtration... less is less...

Make sense?

just hook up a air pump and call it a day.

when you have never used a sponge filter there is no such thing as common sense! I can understand if I was using an HOB that would be obvious but a sponge filter is completly different. Thanks to the users that helped didn't follow the leader!

youre welcome. (btw its kinda hard to not 'follow the leader' when there's only one right answer)

this is true..when you have not seen one they may be a bit confusing.
they are air driven. attach airline to small tube. the big tube is the output. attach other end of airline to a good pump. ;)

To expand on star_rider's explanation, the air bubbles rising up and out of the large outlet tube create a current in the water, drawing the water through the sponges and out the outlet tube. It's the same concept of the old internal corner filters.

I'm curious, what is the yellow sponge to the left? Is it a pre-filter sponge on the inlet tube of an HOB filter? If so, why did you want the simple sponge filter?

I was a bit intimidated by the video and I have a sponge filter myself!
I would try to get it to stay on the bottom since that is where to poop and fish food ends up. Would make it slightly more effective. No biggie though.

The HOB is there only because I haven't had a chance to figure out which filter I like best. don't want to get rid of a cycled filter & materials untill I know the sponge filter will do what I want it to do, also I was under the impression that the sponge filter had to be cycled also.

Right you are. And you can always run both filters. Are there fish in the tank or are you cycling it with ammonia?
