View Full Version : mystery snail question
Yesterday my mystery snail was very active all day rolling all around the tank. I fed him some blanched broccoli which he loved and today I couldn't find him. I looked and looked and finally found him mostly buried in the substrate under some plant roots.
I figure yesterday he was active looking for food and today he's full from the broccoli and taking a rest.
Is it normal for them to bury quite a bit in the substrate?
Thanks!

Yes very normal. I see that it happens frequently when there is a big temp. drop outside and maybe I have some fluctuation in my tank temps over night.
Hmm ok. There hasn't been a big temp change. We did have a 95% water change yesterday because we moved the tank and had to empty a lot to move it. The water was carefully measured to 80 (the temp the tank has been set to all along) and of course dechlorinated before going into the tank. He was moving all around after the water change and chowing on the broccoli. This morning, he was buried near the broccoli but came out to eat some when the light came on and then crawled away. I removed the broccoli and when I checked a bit later, he was mostly buried in a new spot under the plant.

I have a tank dedicated to Mystery snails and they do bury themselves in the substrate from time to time. Just the other day I was concerned since my purple male Mystery buried himself in the substrate for the first time since I acquired him, but today he is back to normal. If everything else is okay I don't think you have to worry.

Sounds like he had a good plan. :grinyes:

Yup.
He came out for a little bit to eat, climbed up the wall, wandered around and then went back in the substrate under the plant he liked first thing this morning.

I honestly wouldn't be worried. I notice this more in "older" snails.
Yea, there's no telling how old this guy is. He's pretty big and by looking at his shell, it seems he's been around awhile. What is their usual life span?
