i have a 55 gallon tank and im going to move the smaller fish and baby fish into this 10 gallon, i have a filter for the 10 with a cartridge that has been seeding in my 55 for a while now
so i just want to know, can i just take 5 or so gallons out of my 55 and put the seeded filter in. should i take some of my substrate out of my 55 also and what do you guys think of sand sub for swordtails and danios

If the filter media is seeded, don't move the water, just start with clean water of the appropriate temperature. The bacteria you want are not in the water column, and importing waste is counter productive.

An handful of substrate will help, but isn't required. Sand is a good substrate for most tropical fish, IMO. It's easy to keep clean, and attractive.
