space wise that sounds good. what else do you/are you going to have in that 30? they tend to almost be annual in the wild so 2-3 years with the best care is about what you should expect out of these pretty fish... if you want to have them for a longer period of time I would suggest trying to breed them. you may be able to get them to breed in harder/higher ph water but expect a lower survival rate unless you give them soft slightly acid water to raise their young in

A fish that i have found difficult enough to keep
and breed, you'll find that they don,t like chemical
changes in their water conditions so you'll need to keep the water stable.
A nice looking cichlid with a mild temperment that can
be kept safely with fish around the same size,
2-4 inches.
Cheers.

A beautiful, peaceful and adorable fish, but it can be devilishly hard getting healthy ones and any stress can bring on illness very quickly.
They seem to settle better in tanks with small dither fish - neon tetras are ideal and need similar conditions.
Make sure that any new tank is really well cycled before introducing these fish as any water quality problems will affect them, it can be weeks before this shows up though.
If you're going to keep a pair try to find a pair in the shop (they'll be setting out a territory and chasing others away) or better still get a half dozen young ones and wait till a pair forms but you'll have to remove the others or the stress of being chased can kill them.

i have 6 rams in one of my tanks and i have got 2 pair out of them i found they are really crap parents but they make great addition to a tank i used to have them in a community tank
My tank had kribs, Guramins, golden eye chiclids, dinos, black widows and more it was a 90 gal tank so there was heaps of diffrent fish in there even eles i found that they went well with them all

I agree with all of the above so far. i would just like to add that I would not try to keep Rams with most any other cichlid in a 30 gal, its just too small. Especially any Cichlid that may be likely to spawn, they'll will most likely kill the Rams. They are beautiful and peaceful fish when they are happy. But, when they aren't they can easily fall victim to a variety of problems. Stable water conditions are a must. Peat in my filter helped alot with these guys.
