Cichlids and Filtration?

Question: I just bought a used 65 gallon with 5 cichlids and 2 catfish. The tank came with a mature Penguin 350 hob filter. However; I've inherited a Marineland 125 sump with a cap-1800 power head. If I put the Maraineland (with the filter cartridges from the Penguin) on the tank and remove the hob, do I need any other kind of filtration or will the sump be enough? The reasoning behind this is that the tank sits in my living room. The less visible tubes and cables (I plan on putting the heater in the sump) the better. Thanks in advanced for any advice.

These are CA/SA Jack Dempseys. The tank came with a pluco and an unidentified catfish (fat body, black with white spots?) which "croaks" when you take it out of the water.

Well, a 65G is too small for 5 full grown JDs. It may be ok for a temporary grow-out. As they mature, they'll get pretty aggressive, and a 65G is big enough for maybe 1 adult JD plus a catfish, or maybe a mated pair of JDs by itself. If the pleco is a common pleco, they grow to 18" plus, so you'll probably be needing a bigger tank for that as well. I'm not sure about your other catfish.

Do you mean the Marineland sump that is rated for up to 125G, called Model 3 I think? I believe that will be enough filtration for a well stocked 65 -- but like I said, unless this is just a grow out tank, there will just not be enough territory for all those JDs in there once they mature.

Thanks and yes, it is the Marineland sump rated for 125G. I think I will also add a Magnum 350 canister that I have laying aroud for safe measure. The two larger JD's are a mated pair and I think eventually I'll just stick with those two. The others are less than 1.5 inches each. I just hate taking perfectly healthy fish to the local fish store, but from reading on this site I know it will be more humane for them in the long run. Again, thanks for all of your help lucy42083!
