Eggcrate question

It is the lighting fixture covers for flourescent lights, hard plastic. Many of us use it to cover the glass bottom of a tank to prevent pressure points from the rock work on the glass or to help absorb the shock if a rock that falls. Many cichlids like to dig in the substrate and upset our hardscape.
Some of us also use them as tank dividers or as an alternative to a glass lid.

Extinct? Since when?
I currently use it for a cover for my 30 gallon elongated hexagonal tank. It was difficult trying to find a glass cover for it, so I just used eggcrate and cut it out with wire cutters. I'm also using it to put at the bottom of my African Cichlid tank to disperse the weight of all the granite to make hiding caves.
RE: foam working, I used Styrofoam. I used eggcrate on the bottom, Styrofoam on top of that, and then the substrate. I wouldn't do it again but it's in there so it's what I have. My Kenyi will move the gravel out and show the bare foam. As for protection, I think that I'm covered.
