Finally took some photos, do you think it would be worth disturbing the tank to put in a dark substrate?

Looks good to me.
You might consider putting a dark blue or black posterboard on the back. It will bring out the colors in the tank and also hide the equipment visible behind the tank.

Looks like a great start. If you remove the fish before changing out the gravel, it won't be a problem. Maybe take the opportunity to switch to a plant substrate and go full planted to match the spiffy new lights? Gotta agree with CB about throwing a dark background on there too. Also, the 3 plants in the left foreground look like they're dracena sanderanias, which means that they're not aquatic and will eventually die if kept submerged.

Thanks! This is my first sucess at a planted tank, the right lighting really makes a difference.
Ahhh yes, I realized soon after I got them they weren't true aquatics - I got trapped in the nasty Petco Aquatic Plant trap. Nearly all the "aquatic" plants they sell aren't aquatic at all. They'll be removed eventually :)
Thanks for the suggestions!

^ agree - I like the light substrate, would add a background, would remove the non-aquatic species. If you keep them in a pot or vase w/ gravel & water adn get them to grow tall enough, you could put them back in the aquarium in their emmersed form. As long as the tops are sticking out of the water, they would probably be OK.
Nice Husky(?) too.

Nice upgrade, those Satellite lights are pretty nice. I've never had a problem with mine. As far as making the most of the wattage that you have, though, you might want to consider replacing the actinic bulb with a 6500K or 10000K or something. Plants don't really utilize actinic light. Do you have any plans to add CO2 or ferts? With the amount of light you'll have over that tank (looks like a 10 gallon to me?) it would probably be a good idea. Also, if you are interested in getting some plants that you will know for sure are aquatic, check out the classifieds forum. There are lots of members here that sell plants and the shipping is very reasonable. Good luck!!! :)

I love my current fixture, and the dog appears to be a shiba inu :grinyes:
I bought a current extreme pro, and love it alot more than my old Coralife PC lights. Plus the free legs are nice.

we have a winner! She's black and tan, instead of the normal red - people always insist she's both a siberian husky and a puppy, haha.

It was kind of expensive, but also sort of inexpensive compared to the nifty setups I've seen here - about $70 w/shipping.
