I'm in the process of setting up another tank and can't decide if I want to paint the background black or blue, so I was hoping you guys would share pictures of your tanks with black or blue backgrounds.

Thanks in advance.

Lazy lol. I painted mine when I converted the tank from cichlid to marine so it was empty and easy to move. 5 coats of Ronseal Black tile paint with a gloss roller did the trick:)

I think it depends on the tank and what you're doing with it. Like, if you are going saltie, I would prefer blue..... if fresh (planted or not), I would go with black.

It used to be an african cichlid tank and now it's being converted to salt. My 29gal already has a blue background and it's nice but I think black would make the colors of the coral stand out more, but at the same time I think algae and any other unwanted growths on glass would stand out too. I'm also planning on painting the background on, since the 29 has streaks from when I cleaned the glass and didn't notice they were left behind now they stick out like a sore thumb. This is on a 45gal by the way.

Thanks for the examples so far, your tanks look awesome.

I like the black background, especially once it gets lots of corraline algae all over it. Mine had a lot at one point but some alkalinity issues killed some of it off but its starting to make a come back. Heres a pic of my 24g.

I prefer black, but once the coralline algae takes off, it's doesn't really matter unless you're willing to keep the back of the tank clean.

I prefer Black however, i have dark purple almost blue in color background. Its the vinyl used to make signs, my dad had a whole role laying around after using it to make our sign for the boat. Its pretty easy to put on and if you ever want to change all you have to do is peel it off and put whatever you want. The dark purple looks almost identical to the open ocean from when I dive. I will be changing it to black since i just got the pre-skimmer box for the remora skimmer and its just ugly. So make sure that with the color u go with it wont make any equipment stick out.

I wish it was laziness lol. It's a 5ft tank and it took 3 of us to lift just the tank let alone the stand as well. Even when empty it's impossible for me to move it on my own.:)

I'll just learn to love the blue!
