i like the HOT filter but it comes with rigid tubing. I was planning on putting it on a 55g but i would like to have a spray bar so i could shoot the current length wise (48") instead of straight forward (12"). Can a spray bar be added? What if the system is a PRO with bio wheel is a spray bar possible?
I'm not to familiar with the HOT filter but I have a Magnum 350 that I DIY a spraybar for. I glued an elbow to the discharge tube and then a piece of tubing with the spraybar. The spraybar was an old intake tube I drilled holes in and siliconed a test tube cap on. Painted with Krylon and work great.
I don't think a bio wheel would have enough back pressure to run a spraybar though.
I'm thinking it is entirely possible, you just need to find the right fittings. I suggest a barb, you can also use regular PVC fittings and PVC flexible tubing...
I have adapted Eheim spraybars and run two HOTs using them. One is fitted into the normal HOT output elbow and the other I jury rigged to the Pro adapter- I had to put a small cork in a hole however.
Its easily adaptable, the plastic cone on the output is easily pulled off, and the rigid tubing is round like tubing, just need to match the diameter with the appropriate sized tubing and your done.
I use HOTs aswell on a couple of my tanks with the micron filter installed as full-time water polishers. But since I dont need or want the extra flow disturbing my planted tanks, I've placed aquaclear sponges over the outlets as baffles.
I'm not sure your going to have enough pressure to use a 48in spray bar with the bio wheel connected. Part of the out flow is diverted to the bio wheel and the rest flows out the exhaust tube. I just dont think there will be enough flow out of the return to do a 48in I use 5 of the HOT magnums on various tanks and have had the same idea you do. If it did flow all the way it would be more a trickle flow I think. Let me know if it works out for you I might just make me some 48in spray bars and give it a try if you have a good result.
