I heard someone saying that they stripped their female mouthbrooder of her fry. What exactly does that mean, and how is it done? How hard is it on the fish to do this?

I think they are saying that they took her fry away. This should be pretty hard on the fish, how would you feel if I took your kids? I'm not too sure how it's done but it is entirely possible.

The hardest part is catching the holding female if she's in the main tank. Stripping basically means you hold the female in one hand and open her mouth with another over a bowl filled with water (or any container you might have) and just dipping her head in the water while holding the mouth open, she then either drops or releases the eggs/fry. At most the procedure takes 10-15 seconds.

Here's a vid:

It is not hard on the fish and it is a pretty common practice. Some fish will hold for too long and need to have this done to protect the fry and the mother. Sometimes females eggs are stripped to cultivate the eggs for hatching.
