I'm currently cycling my tank and at first all of the sand clouded up the water when I put the water in a few weeks ago, the filter quickly cleaned it in about 2 hours making it crystal clear, but I don't know if that harmed the filter cartridge at all? I have a 12 pack of the filters so it's not a problem, but I want to know if it'll ruin the cycling process.

Should I change the filter cartridge at all during the cycling process even with all that sand in there?

Also, I just got two blue legged hermit crabs, should that be enough to clean the algae off of my sand in a 10G?

What are you using in the filter? How much live rock do you have? Have you got a powerhead in the tank?

I think Cav will agree that with that amount of live rock there is no need to be running that filter with the filter media in it. If you want to keep it running for the flow that is cool, just take out the media. Maybe get some live rock rubble to put in there instead.
