I have a really niave question. I have a 72" Coralife Pro retrofit with 3 x 150w MHs. Can I upgrade them by simply changing the ballast? It can't be that simple, but what are the elements that preclude this from being the path forward.

Not 100% sure, but I think 250w DE fixtures have slightly larger sockets for the bulbs as well as a little thicker wiring to the connectors. So besides the ballast, you would probably have to change out the sockets and wiring to the sockets. A little harder than just swapping ballasts, but not that much. Another thing you may have to worry about is cooling. Since you have the retro and not the fixture the cooling is left up to you anyway so you may already have sufficient cooling.
