Ok. I think I have finally decided on gettign rams as my cichlid for the 10 gallon. I have heard that they do best in odd groups. Is that true? If not how do you tell the difference between a male and female cause I atleast want a pair? What type of other fish would go good with them? I really want a community mix meaning I dont just want a couple rams and then like some zebra danios or something I want a few different species. I know I am limited in it would only be a 10 gallon (soposing I get lucky and get it) but I wanted to have a few choices. Thanx ahead for any replies. If you know of any good sites on rams please let me know. Thanx. Have a good day.

I currently have a pair of rams in my ten gallon tank. I suggest getting bigger. Around a 20 long for a pair of rams. I thought it would be okay but since I had them they have spawned once but haven't in two months. My female is getting beat up. I think I'm gonna set up another 10 gallon to separate them for a while then try again. It can then be used for a growout tank if I can get some babies. But to answer your question about how to tell them apart. From what I see on mine the biggest difference is the belly of the female is reddish pinkish color. And since I have gotten the fish, the front few spikes on the top fin of the male has grown much taller than the females.

Thanx for the reply. I have looked at a few sites and form what I have learned it might be best for me just to not try and breed them. Every site I have been on said that most rams are either not good parents or it takes them along time to breed si if I get 2-3 and they breed then I guess it happens but other wise I guess I really just want a small group. Oh and a couple sites said dithers are a good idea so the rams won't be as shy. What do you recomend? This what I am thinking on right now. You can change it or whatever you think is best.

2-3 rams(not sure which knind yet. Just depends on which is eaisiest to find)

maybe like some corys or some bottom feeder(never kept them so any info is helpful)

a little group of leopard zebra danios.

Please let me know of any suggestion you have. Thanx!

Well in my 10 gallon I have a pair of rams, three pgmy cories, and two ottos. I would suggest going with cockatoo cichlids. They are just as beautiful and should breed easier. I think if my male continues to harash my female, I'm gonna give them to a good owner and try to breed cockatoos.

Thanx for the quick reply. I've seen some stuff on those when I was looking for ram info. I'll try to go back and look at some info on them. But I about got my heart set on rams now. I really don't care about breeding them. Thanx again.
