Hi all , i have a 55g tank , with a big top filter box and 2 pumps ( one 475gph and the other one s 185gph ) that do the filterin , ( it will turn to a DIY canister soon ) , and i have undergravel filters all over of my tank s bottom , the question s , do i need under gravel filters ? what if i remove it ...?

You don't need them, but many of us prefer to run them, especially in the reverse mode.

It depends on the fishkeeper themselves. I don't run a UGF but if I did I would run it reverse also. Your running a HOB filter and the "pumps" I think are powerheads to eliminate deadspots? If this is the case I would a) get another HOB kind of as a backup/ insurance plan just incase one gives you trouble and leaves you filterless and to have a spare filter on hand in a pinch. b) Invest in a canister filter and leave the HOB on the tank as well. Never know when you'll need a seasoned filter to have on hand in case of emergency. UGF's are good filters when maintained properly, so If your planning to keep the one you got I would run it reversed and learn about proper maintenance on one.

thnx for replies
a-i always have a backup HOB filter for emergency .
b-my current system is actually a DIY HOT filter runs by my two powerheads .i m buildin a DIY canister system and will put my powerheads in it :)
c-what s revers mode ? :P and how should i maintain my UGF ?

A RUGF uses a canister discharge or a power head to push water DOWN the lift tubes, under the plates and back up thru the gravel.

This helps keep debris from settling in the gravel and minimizes vacs.

Maintaining a UGF is done by regular and thorough gravel vacs.

mm that s a good idea .. mmm u mean push the water through the tubes that push the air now ?

Water goes down the tubes, under the plates and back up thru the gravel..no air needed.

I'm hijacking this plane-

I'm thinking about setting up a RUGF on my 20 long, what powerhead would you say would have the best value for this?
Thanks
