Hi,

I just got my order in today for my Bolivian Rams. I purchased 4, I'm hoping that I'll have a pair form. They are about 2 inches, and I've been trying to sex them. I've been looking though different sites reading information on sexing my Rams. I'm thinking I may have one female of the four.. I'm hoping.

Does anyone have any experience doing this? (I'm sure there are a few of you out there) Tips? I'll get photos up later. I'm letting the Rams settle in good before turning on the lights.

I'll edit this post as soon as I get photos up. :evil_lol:

The males usually have an elongated dorsal and tail fins. The females are more oval in the dorsal and plain in the tail.
Plus the male will have more color on him than the female. But if you have light color substrate then color is out the window..

Heres a video of mine

My female has male characteristics on her fins so the only way I could sex her is by the vent. There is a site that is solely for Bolivians and it has really good info on sexing them by fins and vents. http://www.brc.moonfruit.com/ I found it! Good luck with your new rams.

:iagree:
venting is the only sure way to tell.

I have females that look like males except for the vent.
btw Bolivians can get pretty big for a dwarf.

nice vid Bk

only if the rams would do their major and actually spawn.. it would be great..

I found the site saying something strange though.. 5 rams for a 30g tank.. a bit 2 much IMO considering they get fairly large and cranky.

30 gallons for 5 is a bit of tight quarters! I prefer the rule that they each need 10-12" of "ground space" to be content.
I did like the Sexing part of the sight; it was very helpful to me. Other than that, I have not really seen any updates or changes to the sight in quite a while....too bad.

Thanks for the help. That site is very helpful with the ventrical differences. I think I can tell with that. It looks like I could have two males and two females. Or it either one male with 3 females or 3 males with one female. Prob. won't know for sure until they spawn, if they do. Here are some photos of the little Rams. (its not the best photos I know) Even if I don't get a pair, I'll prob get more later down the road. They are lovely things.

you'd need a lot of structure in this tank ;)

This is my holding tank. I want to made say my Rams are completely health and disease free before putting them in my larger tank.

it's fine to keep young rams in a qt tank for 4-6 weeks.
I do it often.

we are referencing a 30 long term for 5 rams.
considered a bit tight by many. ;)

Just over look me, I didn't even notice the quote text you had on the other post. Silly me.

Can anyone tell the sex of them from the few photos. Just want some prof. opinions. I know it won't be a for sure thing until (if) a pair forms and spawn.

Thanks everyone.

I would let them develop a little more.. they have not colored up. and I can see what looks like a vent but the pic is not clear.

give them a bit more time
