okay, i am changing my setup and i am thinking i am going to have to get a new pump. i did have two 10 gallon tanks back to back with a 274 gallon off brand pump. now i am goint to have a standard double stand the display will be on the top and the fuge will be on the bottom. so i am assuming it will be about a 3.5ft head. so should be pump i have be enough if i reduce the overflow into the fuge. i don't want to have to take up any room in the display with power heads or anything so i just want the return pump to provide all of the flow in the tank. any ideas would be great. thanks.

I'm having a bit of trouble visualizing what you are trying to do. Would you mind doodling a quick image on paint or something to better allow myself or anyone else to understand the situation more?

Do you know the flow of the pump after 3.5' of head loss? That is the big question.

Also, never restrict the drain line going into the fuge. The overflow will drain whatever is being pumped in as long as its properly sized. If you want to restrict flow, restrict the pump output.
