Are they zebra nerite snails? If so, one would be a good addition. They will eat algae, and you can supplement their diet with zucchini, cucumber and algae wafers.

No, it won't harm the fish, just take it out if its not all eaten within a day or two.

I stick a fork in mine to make it sink, you could also use plant weights or a veggie clip. The fork was free.

With the lfs just calling it a zebra snails it could be a couple of different types of snail.

One already named "Zebra Nerite" or possibly a "spixi"

I don't know to much about spixis for the simple fact that they are illegal to ship and I can't find any locally and I have heard some ppl say that they will munch on live plants. They also have egg clutches under the water, and that is something that I haven't been to big on, b/c you have a hard time controlling the population.

So I would double check to see what kind of snail it really is.
Just my opinion.

IF THE LFS IS CALLING THEM ZEBRA THEY COULD BE SPIXIS AS SUGGESTED BY KIM SO MAKE SURE THAT YOU KNOW WHAT TYPE OF SNAIL IT IS FOR SURE BEFORE YOU GET IT AS THERE IS DIFFERENT WAYS OF TAKING CARE OF NITRITES AND SPIXIS - SPIXIS WILL MUNCH OF LIVE PLANTS WHEN BABIES AND DO LAY EGGS IN BLOB IN WATER SO YOU MAY WANT TO KNOW FOR SURE WHAT YOU ARE GETTNG - ALSO THE FISH YOU ARE PLACING IN THERE WITH SNAILS - IF THEY NIBBLE ON SNAILS REMOVE SNAILS AS NIBBLES OFTEN LEAD TO THE RIPPING OFF OF EYE STALKS OR TENTACLES:(

JUST ONE SNAILS LOVER'S POINT OF VIEW:)

my olive nerites are easily supplemented...the clithions and zebras not so much. Asolene spixis are lovelyl snails, but as mentioned, will eat live plants as babies and are restricted from shipping.
