View Full Version : My other hobby....

UncaBret

So, after about 30 years out of the hobby I decided to start building models again. Only this time in 1/48 scale (I used to build 1/35) and my eyes and hands aren't what they used to be. Here goes......
M4 Sherman (pop-tab for size)

You sure love your M4 tanks.

I built a model of the USS Arizona a few years back after a very long break from building models (I used to build model fighter planes before jr. high. They weren't very good.)

No way it compares in details to yours but I'm still proud (and surprised) at how well it came out. Too bad I haven't found a case to put it in so it's collecting dust in my room.

Nice work, bro. You must have a steady set of hands.

You must have a steady set of hands.

Not really. Sometimes I need a twelve pack to get through the detail work.

Something I'm working on now, a 1/35 scale German gun. Gun and base are finished, just waiting on accessories and figures to get finished.

If you need/want dead leaves like those on the Pak 40 base, find some birch trees and gather some of the seed clusters (catkins). Seperate the seeds from the leaf thingies and discard them. The bigger the tree the bigger the "leaves" you get. The smaller ones came from a 4-5" trunked tree, the larger ones came from a 14 -15" trunked tree. (1/35 figure for scale)

Besides the birch seeds, you can use tree roots as trees, very small gravel can be found on the road side. Twigs can be used to make log fortifications.
I assume you want this for wargaming?

I know this may sound like a stupid question but, what is the hair spray for?
Sometimes I like to do my hair while I'm working on a model. It just makes me feel pretty!

Actually, it is one of the best things for fixing ground cover, foliage, etc.. it works like spray glue.

I wonder what it does to hair???

At first the display cases were just supposed to keep the dust off. But then I decided I needed more than just a plain base, maybe some grass or dirt or something. And then it just snowballed.....

It's funny how something as simple as a model can bring back so many memories. My dad and I used to sit around in our slingshot's back in the 80's, drink coffee paint and detail all saturday long (I was like 5). I remember thinking he was the only person in the world who could build em like that. Thanks for the memories man...

What-if M26 Pershing. What if Patton had gotten his wish to attack Russia after the German surrender?
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk253/UncaBret/BFoland/1tanksalot214.jpg

An M26 Pershing of C Co., 66th Armored Regiment, 2nd Armored Division during Operation Red Star, autumn 1945. The 66th's Shermans were replaced with Pershings in Berlin in late June, giving the crews a little over a month to familiarize themselves with their new rides before the push towards Kiev started in late July. The operation was such a success early on that by September the U.S. forces led by Gen. Patton had taken Kiev and turned north-east heading to Moscow.

Tamiya kit, Gaso.Line figures, stowage from Black Dog and Gaso.Line. The ivy is dried duckweed from my 20g Endler farm.

How ya been, buddy?

Had some trouble with the decals, but got it looking pretty good, I guess.
Need to work on the base now. I have an idea, but it will take a bit of work.

Man, I wish you lived close enough to wargame with.

Me and my dad had two battalions of 35th armor. One German, mostly tigers... and one American, mostly TDs and M10s. We had an acre backyard and played weekend long games.

Your work is excellent. Brings back memories, but mine were never that pretty.

The M10 and it's mostly uncompleted base;

The base, so far;

I might have a problem with the top of the case though. It might not fit because the crew is sitting up so high. Oh well, guess I could use it for something else.

An ancient Bandai kit, early '70s production. Barrel replaced with an aluminum one, tracks replaced with Tamiya tracks.

And one-of-a-kind figures made especially by a friend of mine!

Great job, these are awesome. I really enjoyed the german anti tank gun you built. The scene kinda reminded me of saving private ryan. I have a MARK IV female tank I have yet to finish painting. Those things were awesome. I'm pretty obsessed with the first world war for some reason. I think you have inspired me to finish it and make a base or it. Maybe a muddy trench and some Huns on the run!
