I have a male betta and I have been told yes's and no's by everyone about if they will be okay with other fishes. I have such a big tank for just one fish! (10 gal)

I was thinking two small cories, maybe an african dwarf frog. Either the cories, or the frog, not both really. But I also wanted something that wasn't a bottom feeder, any suggestions?

Are these decent choices, and what different requirements would they need compared to my betta? (Betta not needing a filter and such) Are the temperature needs about the same?

Thanks for your input!

Roxy, do you think the personality of your betta will mesh with having tankmates? I ask, because I had a hyper-aggressive betta actually attack cories like it was his job, and I've had less-aggressive ones that would be fine in such a situation. I think that's why you're getting different answers. Bettas and cories can get along pretty well if you have the right betta, but I'd like to see more than just two cories. A shoal of five or six pandas might be a bit tight, stocking-wise, but that would work fairly well if the betta lets it.

Hi!
In my experience, another problem in mixing bettas with other fishes is that if tankmates are fast swimmers, they won't let the betta to feed well enough; he will get nervous and maybe become victim of fin nipping. IMHO, bettas live longer staying alone, even in a small space. You can get a 1gal tank or so for the betta and use the 10gal for other small fishes like cherry barbs, neon tetras or glowlight tetras and small cories. Just an idea!

Your betta needs 78-82 degree water provided by a reliable heating method. He also would benefit from a filter (as any fish would) for oxygenated water and an easy place for beneficial bacteria to live.

Corys need schools to show their behaviors and mannerisms the best. With a proper school of corys you will find they swim everywhere, not just sitting on the bottom. 5-6 cories of the smaller species (like pygmy) could work.

If you just wanted the frog, it would work, but they are not very active. Other fish you might look into include small rasboras, dwarf platies (love this fish!), otos

My Betta is in with everything ( I have no fin nippers ) and she has done great for about a year so far. She ignores the frogs but stays at the bottom most of the time with the cories. Oh and she`s a fat girl so getting food is no problem. I also had her Mom and Dad in the tank but moved them to another 55 when the bubble nest showed up. I kep them in the other ( heavly planted tank ) until their juvis grew up and started showing a bit of aggression to each other. There`s so many myths around about Bettas but like already mentioned it all depends on the individual fish. I`d say give it a try.

I have a male betta in a 15 gal w/2 Coris & 2 Mollies.
In my 35 gal hex I have a male Betta in with 2 Angels & 2 Coris.
My Bettas dont seem to care that they share the tank & they also hang out with the Coris alot.

I have my betta in my 180l tank with various other fish including corries, an angel and rams and he doesn't bother with any of them. Mind you he's got his 4 girlfriends to distract him!...

My two frogs are extremely active day and night. How a betta gets along with other fishes and animals is unique to the betta. If you have a crowntail or a plakat, chances are that they won't accept tankmates. Many people here keep betta-only 10 gals.

My Betta is a Crowntail and she ignores the frogs. No matter what type Betta is in the tank it all depends on the individual fish. Justlike people some are friendly while others could be bullies.
