Here's a video showing my diatom problem. It gets worse with light on. I don't know if this is fine or not but it looks nasty and makes my tank look like everything is dying.

What to do?

I have no skimmer, 15lb rock, just overhang with sponge for flow and large pieces that need to be filtered. 2 hermits, a turbo snail. 30W compact florescent (white & blue).

How old is your tank? If its only a couple months old then the diatoms are a normal part of the tank cycling/maturing process. My tank had diatoms for about 4 months after I set it up before it started to go away. But the hermits and snails will eventually eat it. You might want to get a couple good powerheads too if you want to help keep the water moving and to have more flow.

About a month. Everybody in the house are like "They're all gonna die!", and I'm like "no they're not!" and they don't believe me.

It looks horrible, especially because it's brown. If it was hair algae, it would look decent.

I might get a Hydor 1 since the nano isn't very good and I wouldn't suggest it for more than a 5G tank.

Its normal then, after a month its a sign that your tank has finished cycling and your hermits and snails will be fine. You should add a few more hermits and sails to your clean up crew to clean up the diatoms.

I really like the hydor powerheads the best. I have a hydor 2 and its great.
