I'm running about 4 liters of DIY CO2 for my 20g now. My system is sorta like that one, but w/o check valves at each bottle, which is what I should have done so it makes changing out bottles easier.

for a 20g good start would be 2L just to get a hang of it.. then move on to 3-4L

leave the diy co2 in the tank running all the time.. taking it out would just be a waste.

This is extra effort and unneeded. CO2 causes no problems at night, and the yeast continue producing it, so why would you bother taking it out? You won't be saving it.

People with pressurized co2 shut it off at night to save $$$ since they can. But since you can't shut off DIY CO2, don't worry about it. And before you think about it, you can't just seal off the bottle....BOOM!

First things first, it's nearly impossible to overdose with DIY CO2, but, if you are really that concerned with it, you can time an airstone to come one every night after lights out and shut off before lights on. This will bubble out all co2 and aerate the water. However, in my experience, this is also unneded. Between the juiced up plants and the small amount of surface agitation that is impossible to eliminate, you get enough O2.

So, leave it in, No problems, No work.

yes.. though over time it may crack and seal is broken.. Just make the hole in the cap smaller than the tubing and use pliers to pull the tubing through.

Open parts...like the holes you drilled into the bottle caps? I drilled a hole smaller than the outer diameter of the airline. This way, it's an interference fit and effectively seals itself when you pull the airline through the cap.

Crazy glue - while very adhesive - can't flex so it's a poor choice to use as a sealant.

:iagree: That's what I do. If you think you might get leaks, just use some silicone on the cap around the tubing.

I put a bead of silicone around the air line, inside and outside the cap.

Unfortunately, silicone doesn't make a very good seal with the polyethylene cap used with 2L bottles so the small hole/big tubing trick is the best way.

I did both :P. So far so good.
