Yes, if the pump is powerful enough to pull apart his bubblenest. If its just a simple sponge filter, you may not need to. Most filters wont work with the water low though and to give the male a fighting chance of harvesting up the eggs that are laid the water should only be a few inches deep. SO he doesnt have to work to hard.
