Hello to everyone,
I've been looking for a forum that fits my personality and tastes, maybe this is the one, thought I'd join and post since I've been lurking for a while.
I've been keeping fish for 25 years, and have dabbled in just about every aspect of the hobby over the years. I currently have only one tank set up, a 10 gallon tank in my office at work with 2 platies, 2 otos and 3 tiger barbs, planted with java fern and java moss. My main interests in fish are cichlids, though other perch-like fish and gobies are a close second. In reality, I find any type of fish interesting. I also have the "got to have it" trait that plagues so many aquarists when it comes to exotic fish I've never seen before. Rather than showing discipline and restraint, my solution has always been to learn as much as I could about all kinds of fish so I'd be informed when I came across something unusual, and then to buy another fish tank whenever I needed one. Well, the days of just getting another tank are over, so I'll have to be reasonable in the future. (Right!)
As a result I have around 50 tanks from 220 gallons down to 10 gallons in the garage, waiting for completion of my fish room after I moved. I was originally going to put a separate building in for aquariums (I own 5 acres), but this went the way of the dodo when my youngest daughter decided she wanted sheep for 4-H. So here I am redesigning the basement. The room is framed, 23' x 10'. Next step, running the electrical. Plan on using greenboard base with tile floor and tile 1/3 of the way up the wall for finish, installing a ventilation fan and having the room insulated and heated separate from the rest of the house.
As for me, I live in the U.S.'s version of the Outback, Wonderful Wyoming, and wouldn't have it any other way. I'm a generation X-er with a B.S. in Zoology who works in an oil refinery as Assistant Superintendent for the crude unit and the waste water treatment plant. My wife is being very patient with this project now that she has her sewing room. I'm getting antsy wanting my tanks up, so thought I'd join now even though all I have to contribute is pics of construction.
Hope to become a respected, contributing member over time.
