You have to approach everything with an inpartial mind mainly, not let personal feelings dictate how you act or moderate....

You have to relax and enjoy being a member of staff, because if you are not enjoying it, then maybe its not the role for you....

Always try and keep a level head when approaching situations.....

ALWAYS remember, that even though your a staff member, your STILL a member....

Always be courteous, concider other peoples feelings

Be prepared for people to dislike you....not a nice thought, but, some people on forums really dont like staff members for their own reasons, cant be helped...

Remember that your only human ( except me of course, as i am robot, built into Aquariacentral.com's software infrastructure ;) )

ahhhh.... so i should aim for a kind, level headed, fair yet firm robot built into the infrastructure of OUR (not my) forum

The best advice I could give, Is remember some things are better handled behind the scenes:) Emails and PMs can solve tons!

I was a mod at a dog breed forum for awhile, and loved it! make sure its something you love, and that you are willing to put in time, and research to provide the best answers available as well!! When your a mod, people listen to what you have to say( whether they want to admit it or not) !!

I'm not really a mod, so you don't have to listen to me, but I have found that I respect a moderator a lot more when they handle a situation maturely. One time I came across a couple of mods on another site for a different hobby that were hypocrites.... didn't respect those guys at all. Firm yet polite seems to get the job done I think.

one important thing is to be able to see a situation from several different angels and each solution may not be necessarily be what you wish it to be, but it's got to be the most fairest between all parties.

Just like all members may not think the best of you, you might not think the best of some members, but with that thought, you should still maintain this highest degree of fairness, being about to remove your personal feelings and come to the fairest solution for all members as well as for the site.

the balance should be supreme.

I'll throw my two bobs worth in, mate.
I'm a bit older..NOT OLD...and hadn't used a computer, but really love this forum.
I have to read posts from computer savvy people five times, because there's no punctuation or correct use of grammer. BUT, I'm realizing that that's not bad, its different, its new communication. I didn't even know what LOL meant until two days ago. I had to ring the library an hour away....you should have heard the staff laugh. Till then I'd assumed it was a fishy term I'd decipher if I just hung in long enough!
Anyway, all the pros have helped you out. I just thought I'd offer a view which might represent members who at times feel intimidated.
Reef's got the idea.....patience, level-headed.....helping to make even silly old blokes feel part of things is a very special ability.
Cheers
Greg PS Next thing you know I'll have worked out how to attach one of those smiley face things! LOL

I don't believe you, Niko. You have a heart even if it froze. A robot doesn't and you have no proof you are a robot.:banhim:

the only other bits of info i can offer you is tap the resource that is the other mods from the site, they will let you know the score on the actions of moderating the forum.
also use common sense when dealing with members as this can sometimes go out the window in what can be heated situations in some instances.
